Family-run Y Castell in Llangadog is celebrating after receiving two prestigious AA accolades: Two AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence and a Four Gold Star Inn rating.
The awards are a significant achievement for owners Jonathon Wilkins and Fiona Evans, who reopened Y Castell in June 2024 following the restoration of the historic Georgian coaching inn.
In just over two years, the independent business has established a strong reputation for its restaurant, accommodation and warm Welsh hospitality, attracting both local diners and visitors exploring Carmarthenshire and Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons).
The Two AA Rosettes recognise the quality and consistency of the cooking led by head chef Lewis Wilson.
The kitchen uses seasonal Welsh produce to create menus that combine familiar dishes with contemporary cooking. Y Castell works with local butchers, farmers, producers and other businesses wherever possible, helping visitor spending support the surrounding rural economy.
The Four Gold Star Inn rating recognises the quality of Y Castell’s accommodation, service and overall guest experience.
Guests can stay in one of six individually designed en-suite bedrooms within the restored coaching inn. The property also includes a bar, restaurant and sheltered walled courtyard for outdoor dining.
Y Castell occupies an important place in the history of Llangadog, which developed as a market town and stopping point for drovers travelling through the Tywi Valley.
Restoring the building has brought a prominent local inn back into use while creating new reasons for visitors to eat, stay and spend time in the village.
The project also has a personal connection for Jonathon and Fiona, whose family history in the area extends across several generations. Supporting Llangadog and its local economy has been central to their plans for Y Castell from the beginning.
Located between Llandovery and Llandeilo, Y Castell provides a convenient base for exploring the Tywi Valley, the western reaches of Bannau Brycheiniog and destinations across Carmarthenshire.
Visitors can explore walking and cycling routes, discover nearby market towns or travel along the scenic Heart of Wales railway line. Llangadog also lies on the long-distance Brecon Beacons Way.
The inn welcomes overnight guests, local diners and visitors looking for somewhere to stop for a meal or drink while travelling through the area. It is also dog friendly.
