From rock to peat: two UNESCO Geopark walks this October

View across the former Penwyllt quarry landscape in Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark

Two guided walks this October offer the chance to explore how rock, water, peat, fire and people have shaped the landscape of the Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark.

Taking place in two very different parts of the Geopark, these walks connect the landscape’s deep history with the environmental challenges and conservation work of today. They are an opportunity to slow down, look more closely and understand the places we pass through.

A community shaped by rock — Sunday 4 October

This 7.5km guided walk explores the landscape around Craig-y-nos Country Park and Penwyllt, where geology has shaped routes, work and community life over generations.

From the rock beneath your feet to the stories of quarrying, caving and the people who lived and worked here, the walk offers a fascinating way to discover how a distinctive landscape has influenced the communities around it.

Fire and flood — Sunday 11 October

The second walk follows a 9km circular route from Dan-yr-Ogof Showcaves to Waun Fignen-felen, exploring the relationship between peatland condition, fire, flooding and wider environmental risk.

Waun Fignen-felen is an upland peat bog above an extensive cave system. Healthy peat can store carbon and water, while damaged or dried-out peat is more vulnerable to erosion and fire. This guided walk offers a chance to understand those connections in the landscape and to learn why peatland conservation matters.

The event also marks the United Nations International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, held annually on 13 October.

Walk the story of the landscape

Together, these walks show the Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark as a living landscape: shaped by its geology, influenced by people and continually changing through natural processes and human activity.

Both walks are advance-booking events. Full meeting-point, route and preparation details are available through the booking links above.
