Steam Returns to Brecon Mountain Railway This March – Plus a Reminder for Local Residents

By j.bell on 27/02/2026

Brecon Mountain Railway has announced the first steam services of 2026, with weekend trains returning from Saturday 7th March.

This marks the start of the early-season programme ahead of the full 2026 main season launch on Saturday 28th March.

Both steam locomotives are currently undergoing their annual inspections and, subject to approval, No.1 Santa Teresa will be back in steam to haul trains through Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park from the opening weekend.

March Weekend Timetable

From Saturday 7th March:

  • Departures from Pant at 11:00
  • 12:30
  • 14:00

Please note that trains will not stop at Pontsticill during these early-season weekends.

A Different Kind of Spring Visit

There is something distinctive about steam in early March. Fewer visitors, crisp mountain air and far-reaching views combine with the sound of a working locomotive climbing through the landscape.

For visitors and residents alike, these early services offer a quieter way to experience one of the region’s most iconic heritage attractions before the full timetable resumes later in the month.

The café at Pant will be open serving seasonal refreshments, and the shop will also be open for railway gifts and souvenirs.

A Reminder for Local Residents

Brecon Mountain Railway’s Locals Loyalty Card continues to offer exclusive benefits to residents of the Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council area.

Cardholders receive:

  • 20% off train tickets (excluding special events)
  • 10% off in the gift shop and cafés
  • Every 5th hot drink free

Residents can apply by bringing proof of address — such as a council tax bill, utility bill or driving licence — to the shop at Pant Station or the Café at Pontsticill.

It’s a simple way for local families and regular visitors to enjoy the railway year-round while supporting a much-loved heritage attraction.

Book Early

With limited weekend services running before the main season begins on 28th March, advance booking is recommended.

Early spring is a particularly atmospheric time to experience the railway — whether as part of a weekend break, a family day out or a relaxed local outing.

Steam is back for 2026.
