On Saturday, we witnessed verbal abuse being directed at Mountain Rescue volunteers on Pen y Fan, Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons). It was upsetting, unacceptable and something we felt we had to stand up against — publicly and clearly.
Mountain Rescue teams are not there for applause. They are there because someone needs help. They turn out in all weathers, at all hours, often putting their own safety at risk to help strangers in distress. They are volunteers. They are highly trained. And they deserve respect.
In Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, Mountain Rescue teams play a vital role in keeping people safe — walkers, runners, families, locals and visitors alike. When things go wrong on the hills, woodland or on inland water, they are the ones who respond, working alongside other emergency services to save lives.
Verbal abuse towards any emergency service is wrong. When it is aimed at volunteers who give their time freely, it is especially hard to understand.
As an organisation representing tourism businesses across Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), we rely on strong, trusted emergency services.
Visitors rely on them.
Local communities rely on them.
And the outdoor economy relies on people feeling safe and supported when exploring our landscapes.
We are proud to stand alongside our emergency services and volunteer teams, including Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team, and to say clearly: abuse has no place here.
If you’re out enjoying the hills of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons), please remember:
Our landscapes are special. The people who protect and support those who use them are just as important.
We will always stand up for our emergency services and volunteers — and we hope others will too.
