The Friends of the Brecon Beacons (Brecon Beacons Park Society) are pleased to announce the receipt of a grant from the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund (SDF). This funding, matched by the Society, has enabled the Tramroads Project to engage a professional archaeologist, marking a significant step forward in preserving the region's industrial heritage.
The Tramroads Project focuses on identifying, mapping, and surveying the historical tramroad sites within the Brecon Beacons National Park. These tramroads, once vital for transporting materials during the industrial revolution, now serve as important historical landmarks and walking routes. The project's aim is to document these sites and advocate for their protection, ensuring they remain part of our shared heritage.
Community Involvement and Volunteer Training
With the new funding, the project has commenced training volunteers in industrial and community archaeology. This initiative not only aids in the preservation efforts but also engages the community, providing hands-on experience in archaeological practices. Volunteers will work alongside professionals to survey and document tramroad sites, contributing to the broader understanding and conservation of these historical structures.
The project welcomes new volunteers interested in industrial archaeology and heritage conservation. No prior experience is necessary, as training will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity to learn new skills, contribute to preserving local history, and be part of a community-driven initiative.
