Llandovery Farmers Market has officially become Wales’ first market accredited under the Real Farmers Market scheme, launched by the Farm Retail Association earlier this year. This new industry standard brings much-needed clarity to what it means to be a true farmers market—and Llandovery is leading the way.

Market manager Raoul Bhambral explains:
“It means you can talk to the actual person who made the cheese, raised the livestock, or grew the veg. They’ve done all that and now they’re selling it to you in person. This is more than food—it’s a real food story. It’s fresh, it’s local, it’s sustainable. It tastes great too!”
The market passed the scheme’s three core principles with flying colours:
Championing farmers – Customers buy directly from producers
Proud of provenance – Food is traceable from field to fork
Prioritising local – Stallholders are drawn from the surrounding area
Held on Llandovery Market Square, the market showcases some of the best produce in Wales—from pasture-fed meats, honey and veg to award-winning cheeses, beers, chutneys, gluten-free bakes, foraged finds and pollinator-friendly plants. Even the street food is made using local ingredients wherever possible.
“Come and find out for yourself,” adds Raoul. “Our next market is on Saturday 6 July. Just bring your wallets and a big shopping bag.”
This new recognition is part of the More Than Food campaign, supported by FRA patron Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, celebrating the importance of knowing where your food comes from and who made it.
