If you’ve ever wanted to try hill walking but felt unsure about where to go or how to begin, these free taster hill walks offer a welcoming and confidence-building introduction.
Led by experienced volunteer walk leaders from the Brecon Beacons Park Society (Friends of the Brecon Beacons), the walks take place in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park and are designed specifically for people who are new to hill walking or looking to ease their way back into it.
The focus is on enjoyment, good company and discovering what the hills have to offer at a comfortable, unhurried pace.
Upcoming taster walks
Saturday 24 January – Disgwylfa above Llangynidr (near Crickhowell)
Approx. 4km
This shorter route makes an ideal first step into hill walking, with gentle gradients and wide views over the surrounding countryside. It’s a great option if you’re curious about walking on higher ground but want to start small.
Wednesday 4 February – Ridge walk just north of Bwlch
Approx. 6km
A slightly longer walk offering a real taste of classic Brecon Beacons landscapes, while still keeping things friendly and achievable for beginners.
What to expect
These taster walks are about building confidence and opening the door to hill walking in a safe, encouraging way. You don’t need previous experience – just a reasonable level of fitness and suitable clothing for the weather.
