This autumn marks a special milestone for the Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark, as it celebrates its 20th anniversary within Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. To mark the occasion, a dedicated festival will take place across two weekends, offering walks, talks and family activities that highlight the extraordinary story of this landscape.
Fforest Fawr gained its UNESCO designation in 2005, recognising its internationally important geology and the way the land has shaped the culture, heritage and livelihoods of the region. It remains the only UNESCO Global Geopark in Wales, making this yearโs festival a truly significant celebration.
The programme includes guided walks led by Alan Bowring, the Geoparkโs Development Officer, alongside local experts who will reveal how millions of years of geological history have influenced everything from local wildlife to industry and settlement. Visitors can expect to encounter fossils, dramatic rock formations and the stories of the communities who have lived among them.

The festival will also feature activities for families and schools, helping young people and children to connect with the landscape and understand its importance in shaping our shared future.
With its mix of learning, discovery and celebration, the Geopark Festival is an unmissable opportunity to explore one of the most remarkable corners of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. Places are limited, so booking early is recommended.
