Taniya Keoghan was an Army officer for seven years before embarking on a colourful
career that varied from radio resenter to parachute rigger. The Forces and their many
facets have been a huge part of Taniya's life and she is particularly interested in
the role women have played throughout military history. The Air Transport Auxilary was
formed in 1939 as a civilian arm of the RAF to support WW2 efforts overseas
and by 1940 women made up more than10 per cent of the strength of the ATA.
Having first been confined to minor flying roles, women were soon flying
everything from Spitfires to Lancasters and undertaking the same tasks as men
with two 'ferry pools' eventually being staffed entirely by women pilots. Spitfire
