Hay Bluff and the Black Hill Challenge Guided Walk

Hay Bluff and the Black Hill Challenge Guided Walk

7 Jun 2026
Location: Hay Bluff Common Car Park
Address: Hay Bluff, Hay-on-Wye, Powys HR2 0PX, Wales, UK

Join professional guide Sarah Price this summer for a guided challenge walk across some of the most iconic ridges of the Black Mountains. At around 10 miles, with 1,847 feet of ascent, this is an energetic day out – but the rewards are more than worth it.
We begin from the Hay Bluff car park, climbing steadily up the famous Offa’s Dyke Path onto the high ridge. Our route takes us across Black Hill, celebrated in Bruce Chatwin’s novel On the Black Hill, and along the dramatic Cat’s Back. From here, we descend into the secluded and beautiful Olchon Valley, before climbing once more to regain the ridge and follow the Offa’s Dyke Path towards Hay Bluff itself.
At 677m, its trig point marks the high point of our day, straddling the border of England and Wales with sweeping views across Herefordshire, the Black Mountains, & beyond. From here, we descend gradually back to our starting point.

This walk is remote, wild, and challenging – with two climbs and two descents – but very achievable. We’ll take our time, enjoy the views, and walk at a steady pace where no one is left at the back. If you’re looking for a summer adventure that brings both challenge and a great sense of accomplishment, this is the walk for you.
