This half term, Big Pit is bursting with spooky fun and underground adventures for all the family. Join the team for two days packed with folklore, fun, and fascinating stories from Wales’ mining past.

Saturday 25 October – A Mine Full of Mischief

👻 Mystical Mines

Step inside our storyteller’s cosy cottage for ancient tales of Wales’ mysterious mine monsters. From mischievous mermaids to cursed boars and dragons, explore the legends that shaped our landscape — then make your own Fantasy Folklore Map of Wales.

  • £7 per child, suitable for ages 3+

😱 The Coblynnau of Big Pit

Create your very own Coblyn (Goblin) mask ready for Halloween, pick up your free Coblyn Trail, and explore Big Pit to uncover traces of these mythical mining goblins. Don’t miss the Coblyn Ball — a dance for goblins, ghosts, and little miners alike!

  • Suitable for all ages
  • FREE – drop-in session, 11am–3pm
  • Goblin Ball: 11.45am–12.15pm

🐻 Butty Bear’s Halloween Fun

Join Big Pit’s beloved Butty Bear for some spooky fun! Catch him at the Coblyn Ball (11.45am–12.15pm) and roaming the site at 2pm for selfies and smiles.

  • Suitable for all ages
  • FREE

Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 October – Free Underground Tour Weekend

Travel 300 feet underground with Big Pit’s world-famous guides and discover what life was like for the thousands of men, women, and children who once worked at the coal face.

  • FREE tours, 10am–3.30pm
  • No booking required (but let the team know if you’re coming!)
  • Children must be at least one metre tall to go underground

The Underground Tour also runs daily until 3 November (standard charges apply).
