Independent bookshop Book-ish, a proud member of Brecon Beacons Tourism, celebrates its 15th anniversary this weekend, marking a journey that has become a cornerstone of Crickhowell’s cultural life and a beacon for book lovers across Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons).
Founded by Emma Corfield-Walters in October 2010, Book-ish began in a tiny shop at the bottom of Crickhowell High Street, with no heating and a notebook to record every purchase. Fifteen years on, the shop has grown into an award-winning business with a thriving café, a second branch in Abergavenny, and a reputation for championing books, writers, illustrators and readers.
The story of Book-ish is one of resilience and imagination. The shop has twice been named Best Independent Bookshop in the UK (2020 and 2024), played a part in Crickhowell winning Best British High Street 2018, and earned the High Street Hero award the same year. Through flooding, a pandemic, and the challenges of independent retail, Book-ish has continued to grow thanks to the support of its loyal community.
Along the way, the team have hosted hundreds of author events, welcomed thousands of readers, and created a vibrant hub that is now firmly part of the cultural heartbeat of the region.
Reflecting on the milestone, Emma says: “I would never have believed back then that we’d go on to win awards, buy our own shop with the help of supporters, or open a second branch. We couldn’t have done it without you, dear reader.”
