Town-centre landmarks, archive material and y Gaer are among the layers of Brecon's past brought together by this free self-guided project.
Explore Brecon’s heritage through a free self-guided town trail, local stories and cultural listings.
Brecon Story is a volunteer-led heritage and cultural project that brings the history, people and places of Brecon to life. Its free online resources help visitors look beyond the town’s streets and buildings to discover the events and communities that have shaped them.
At the heart of the project is WALK: The Brecon Story, a self-guided heritage trail divided into ten sections. Visitors can follow the complete route or explore individual sections at their own pace using the information available online.
The route begins around the Guildhall and town centre before visiting landmarks including y Gaer, Brecon Cathedral, the Cathedral Close, Brecon Castle, the River Usk, the canal basin and the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welsh.
Along the way, the trail introduces historic buildings, well-known residents, military connections, religious heritage and stories from Brecon’s social and industrial past. Each online section provides the context needed to understand what can be seen along the route. Explore the heritage trail
As this is a self-guided walk through the town, visitors can choose the sections that suit their available time and mobility. Individual sites and outdoor sections may have different access arrangements and surfaces.
The Brecon Story website is also a growing source of articles, interviews and digital resources about the town. These cover subjects ranging from the Welsh archers and Brecon’s military history to pioneering local women, community celebrations and the canal.
Its regularly updated What’s On section brings together cultural events taking place at venues throughout Brecon, helping visitors discover exhibitions, concerts, talks, performances and community activities during their stay.
