This June, the Brecon Mountain Railway will mark a remarkable milestone — 45 years since its first passenger train steamed into the Welsh countryside. On 7–8 June 2025, visitors are invited to join a spectacular weekend of steam, nostalgia and celebration, honouring the vision of founder Tony Hills and the dedicated team who have kept the railway’s heritage alive.
The anniversary weekend promises to be unforgettable, with a packed programme for railway enthusiasts, families and visitors alike:
Double-headed Baldwin steam locomotives pulling passenger trains — a first for Brecon Mountain Railway
Special guest locomotive ‘Margaret’ from the Vale of Rheidol Railway, offering driving experiences in the yard
Workshop tours, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at restoration projects, including the new-build Forney locomotive and the TU7 diesel
The return of ‘Pendyffryn’, the De Winton locomotive restored by Tony Hills, coming back to Merthyr for this special occasion
All event activities are included in the standard train ticket price — no extra charge for the celebrations.
