After a quieter summer, BBT member Black Mountains Gliding Club is back in the air and welcoming visitors, returning members and anyone curious about the sport to its base near Talgarth.
Back to regular flying
The club’s tow plane, Daisy, spent the summer away for essential maintenance while members took the opportunity to visit some of the many other gliding clubs around the country. She returned at the end of August, and the club is now flying every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.
Whether you are interested in trying gliding for yourself or simply want to see what happens at the club, visitors are welcome. Local residents, friends and families can come along, watch the aircraft from the viewing area beneath the old oak tree and enjoy a different perspective on the landscape around Talgarth.
Introductory flights, vouchers and training
Black Mountains Gliding Club offers introductory gliding flights and gift vouchers, as well as training for anyone who would like to progress towards solo flying and beyond.
Training takes place in two-seater gliders, with a qualified instructor alongside you, so there is always expert support in the cockpit. Once pilots have flown solo, the club also has a number of single-seat gliders to help them continue developing their skills.
A volunteer club with a warm welcome
The club is run by volunteers, including its instructors and tow pilots. That volunteer structure helps keep the costs of flying as low as possible while maintaining a friendly, supportive environment for new and experienced glider pilots alike.
Jan, who has been a club member for 25 years and now helps support the small committee, is also exploring ways for the club to become even more involved in the local community, including the possibility of social membership and local discounts.
