Black Dragon Challenge returns on 18 April 2026

By j.bell on 24/01/2026

The Black Dragon Challenge returns on Saturday 18 April 2026, offering walkers the chance to take on a demanding personal challenge while raising vital funds for the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team.

Starting and finishing at Llangors Community Centre, the event takes place in the heart of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) and explores the dramatic landscapes of the Black Mountains. All routes reach Waun Fach (811m), the highest point in the range.

A challenge with a strong local legacy

First held in 2019, the Black Dragon Challenge replaced the long-running Black Mountains Roundabout, which had taken place annually since 1982. The event continues that tradition of endurance walking in the Black Mountains, while directly supporting a life-saving local service.

Every penny raised goes to Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, a 100% volunteer-led organisation that operates a 24/7, 365-day emergency rescue service. Running the team costs approximately £65,000 per year, with no external funding.

As BMRT Ambassador Kate Humble explains:

“It is an opportunity for people to challenge themselves, and enjoy the glorious environment of the Black Mountains, whilst also raising money for a wonderful and vital cause.”
