On Saturday 3 October 2026, walkers will take to the hills around Talybont-on-Usk for Beat the Beacons — an annual challenge event raising funds for Brecon Mountain Rescue Team.

Starting and finishing at the Community Hall in Talybont-on-Usk, the event offers three routes, making it possible for experienced hillwalkers, families and those looking for a new challenge to take part.

Choose your route

• The 22-mile Endurance route visits some of the highest points in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park.
• The 15-mile Adventure route follows a similar route while avoiding the highest summits.
• The 10-mile Family Taster route uses lower-level footpaths and is designed for less experienced walkers, families and children.

Beat the Beacons is organised to support Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, a 100% volunteer-led service responding to emergencies across the mountains, valleys and remote areas of mid Wales. Every penny raised goes directly towards keeping this life-saving service running. The team operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with annual running costs of approximately £65,000.

There are no entries on the day, and the closing date for entries is Tuesday 29 September. Registration and start times vary by route, with the Endurance route beginning at 7.30am and the Family Taster route at 9am.

Participants should read the full event information carefully before taking part. Essential mountain kit includes waterproofs, suitable footwear, map, compass, torch, first aid supplies, survival bag and whistle. The routes are not marked on the ground and map-reading skills are required.
