In the heart of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, a unique centenary celebration is taking place this September, honouring one of the region’s most remarkable archaeological finds – the Llangors Log Boat.
Discovered in 1925 and raised from Llangors Lake, the boat was a pivotal find that contributed to the founding of the Brecknock Museum’s collection. Now, 100 years later, the Llyn Syfaddan History Group and The Brecknock Society invite the community and visitors to mark this special anniversary with an evening of insight, memory and local pride.
The event takes place at Llangors Youth & Community Centre on Thursday 19th September at 6.30pm and features a keynote talk by Dr Mervyn Bramley, who will take guests through the log boat’s discovery, its historical significance, and the wider story of the lake and its ancient crannog. There will also be a personal recollection from Bob Hansel, whose family ties to Thomas Jenkins – the man who discovered the boat – bring the story to life.
On display will be the Time Team replica log boat, made during the iconic 1994 TV episode filmed at Llangors Lake, along with a range of commemorative items including a special booklet launch, greetings cards and a reprinted centenary tea towel.
The new publication, Llangors Lake: Past and Present, is written by Alison Noble and Elaine Starling, with support from the Brecknock History Forum. It explores the rich heritage of the lake, from Mesolithic finds to royal visits and Victorian nature lovers. It will be available to purchase on the night for just £5.
Free refreshments and a finger buffet will be served after the talks, and while entry is free, donations are welcome to support the ongoing work of the history group.
This is a rare opportunity to hear local voices and expert insight into a defining moment in the area’s heritage. Whether you’re a local resident, a curious visitor, or passionate about the past, this evening promises to be both educational and warmly welcoming.
