Stuart Williams brings a rare mix of heritage-rail leadership, community development experience and long-standing business insight to our board. With a career spanning preserved railways, rural community projects and over 30 years in commercial leadership, he offers valuable knowledge across many parts of the visitor economy.
Stuart is currently working with the Vale of Rheidol Railway in Aberystwyth on their planned 2025 acquisition of the Brecon Mountain Railway, with the intention of managing the Brecon line once the sale is complete. His role covers operational oversight, long-term planning and preparing both railways to share best practice under unified ownership. It’s a significant moment for heritage rail in Wales, and Stuart’s steady leadership is central to the transition.
Before returning to Wales, Stuart managed the Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre Development Trust in Orkney, leading community sustainability projects across three islands. Earlier, he served as General Manager of the Talyllyn Railway in Gwynedd—the world’s first preserved railway—where he oversaw heritage operations, volunteer engagement and visitor services across a line with more than 150 years of history.
Alongside his heritage and community work, Stuart co-founded County Marquees Ltd in 1990, remaining a stakeholder today. His commercial background in events, logistics and customer service adds valuable breadth to his tourism leadership. He also volunteers as a Community First Responder, reflecting his commitment to supporting the communities he serves.
Stuart joined the Brecon Beacons Tourism board in 2024. As he puts it:
“I’m proud to help support a region I care deeply about. Our aim is simple: to help local businesses thrive and to champion the landscapes, people and heritage that make the Brecon Beacons so special.”
His calm approach, practical mindset and deep understanding of heritage and rural tourism make him a strong and valued member of the BBT board.
