Our National Park contains some of Wales’ most spectacular scenery and rarest wildlife. Go quietly and you may see our key species – otters, great crested newts, marsh fritillary butterflies, bats and reed warblers – along with a host of other mammals, birds, amphibians, fish and insects.
Our rivers are the breeding grounds of trout and salmon – a delicious meal for any otter, and a real spectacle when making their way upstream to spawn. Threatened species such as water voles and white-clawed crayfish, a sort of freshwater lobster, can also be found in our waterways.
Many species of birds nest or winter here, thanks to the diversity of habitats. The little ringed plover, for example, broods its eggs on gravel banks, and large numbers of winter migrants visit Llangorse Lake and Talybont Reservoir.
Our park is a superb place for a botanical nature trail, too, hunting for wildflowers, mosses, fungi and rare trees.

Welsh Overland Safari
Welsh Overland Safari is an independent guide tour company offering unique overland guided tours of some of the most beautiful, unspoilt landscapes in Europe, as well as rare natural habitats for wildlife. One of Wales’s best kept secrets, the region has a rich and diverse history dating back to well before Roman times. Exploring the rugged mountains, lakes, waterfalls and forests of the area.
With over 20 years’ experience, the founder Richard Davies started Welsh Overland Safari because they wanted to share their passion for the area and share his knowledge with like-minded adventurers.
We've designed our guide tours to be enjoyed be all, with itineraries designed to get you off the beaten track at a slower pace whilst including all the "must see highlights". Smaller groups allow for more flexibility, spontaneity and time to explore. Our published itineraries represent the minimum of what can be achieved on our guided tours and there is always some surprises along the way too.
And it's not just our guided tours that make us different. When you join Welsh Overland Safari you'll be traveling with one of our experienced and passionate guides namely ourselves.
Some of their tours in the Brecon Beacons include:
-Explore more of waterfall country
We can add trips to Henrhyd Fells, the highest in the Brecon Beacons and used as the batcave in the recent batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. We can stop at the waterfall centre in Pontneddfechan, or at any other falls that take your fancy including Water-break-its-neck near New Radnor or Blaen y Glyn near Talybont on Usk.
- Caves
The Brecon Beacons encompasses some of the most special and important cave systems in Europe. We can explore cave entrance's such as Porth-yr-Ogof and even include a trip to the National Showcaves of Wales
- Abbey Cwm Hir Hall
This historic neo-Elizabethan country house is a must see if you visit the area, we can incorporate a trip here as part of the Grand tour of the Elan Valley
- The Big Pit Mining Museum
Add a trip to a real coal mine and one of Britain's leading mining museums with facilities to educate and entertain all ages
- Food and Drink
Here in Mid Wales we are blessed with handfuls of award winning micro food and drink businesses, we would be happy to add visits to Llanfaes Dairy for fresh ice cream, a tour of Brecon Brewing to taste real ales and a trip to Penderyn Distillery, the home of Welsh whisky.
