Bwlch with Altitude-2nd June

Discover Llangorse & Bwlch

Bwlch With Altitude is a popular, family friendly navigation challenge held annually in Llangorse & Bwlch since 2009. The challenge can be conducted either by foot or on your mountain bikes, and it is a team event (minimum 2; maximum 8 members per team). Whilst navigating the routes, your team will have a quiz sheet to fill in, digital checkpoints to collect, photographs to take, and marshals to say hello to! There are prizes galore… all kindly donated by local businesses. The challenge starts with check-in, safety briefing and refreshments at Bwlch Village Hall.

There are 3 options to choose from:

  1. A 15 mile circular mountain bike route – ideal training for MTB challenges such as the Brecon Beast. Our route requires entrants to have some experience – it contains steep ascents/descents over rough terrain, and riders must wear a safety helmet.
  2. A 12 mile circular walk – ideal training for WAAT4 and similar challenges, or just a really good day out in the hills with your mates!
  3. A 5 mile circular walk – ideal for families of all ages.

The Drover Cycles Gospel Pass Everesting Challenge-16th June

Fancy a sensational summer cycling challenge?? The concept of “everesting” is simple. Choose a hill and ride up and down by the same route until you have clocked up 8,848 meters of ascent, i.e. the height of the world’s tallest mountain, Mt. Everest. Simple does not mean easy. For our chosen route, from Hay on Wye to Gospel Pass, you’re going to need to repeat the climb 16 times. It’s as much a psychological challenge as it is a physical endeavour. How will you motivate yourself to keep grinding the gears and turning the pedals to achieve your goal? Base Camp at Drover Cycles will be in operation throughout offering food, drink and mechanical support as well as a bike expo, family-friendly activities and BBQ open to all. Spectators and supporters welcome! This event is raising funds for Himalayan Quests Foundation. Team entries available. More here.

Finding Your Way: Introduction to Navigation-30th June

This one day course is for anyone who has ever looked at a map and wondered where to start.  At first glance they can appear a daunting prospect, but with a little knowledge you can unlock the information they contain and open up a whole new way of enjoying your walks.  During the day we'll dispel a few myths, unravel contour lines and shortcut the mental maths of scales, grid references and bearings.  At the end you should be able to understand the features on a map, plan a simple route and navigate it competently.

The course is an ideal pre-cursor to our Safety on the Hills course and is run by Manzoku Climbing & Mountaineering, a local company with over 25 years’ experience of helping people safely enjoy the hills and mountains of the UK.  £35.00 per person.  Course needs a minimum of 4 participants to run.  This will be confirmed one week before the course.
