Weatherman Walking heads for the hills

The new series of BBC1 Wales’, Weatherman Walking, will feature two of the Brecon Beacons’ hidden gems: Bwlch and Llangorse. The episode which will broadcast at 7.30pm, this Friday 20th January, follows Derek Brockway as he walks Bwlch with Solitude; a route created especially for the programme, with Emma Harrison, local walking guide and owner of The Star Bunkhouse in Bwlch.

Derek the Weather’s popular television show takes him all over Wales and series 10 will showcase several new walks. The episode was shot last summer in the Brecon Beacons National Park and sees Derek don his walking boots for a seven mile, energetic walk exploring the local villages and surrounding countryside. Featured are Bwlch and Cwmdu, the peaceful Rhiangoll valley, and Mynydd Llangorse on the western edge of the Black Mountains. Derek also delves into the legends of Llangorse Lake, the largest natural lake in South Wales and gains insight into the life of the Reverend Thomas Price, Welsh scholar, antiquarian and vicar of Cwmdu in the 1800s.

Emma Harrison, who appears on screen with Derek told us; “Taking a walk with Wales’ most famous weatherman was a great adventure, Derek was astounded by the beauty of Bwlch and Llangorse with its panoramic views of the Black Mountains and Central Beacons. The Bwlch with Solitude, walk was created especially to showcase the splendour of the area, a real hidden gem away from the main mountains. The route will be published on our destination website so everyone can walk it, ‘as seen on TV’!  To discover more and download the route visit aroundllangorselake.co.uk.”

In celebration of the new walk the Llangorse and Bwlch Rural Alliance; a group made up of local people and businesses passionate about sharing the area they live in and love, are running a Facebook competition. The prize for one lucky winner will be an Adventure Weekend at the destination in South Wales, which includes accommodation, a hamper of local Welsh produce and a choice of two activities including a guided bike ride or paddle boarding on Llangorse lake. Winners can also take a behind the scenes Weatherman Walking walk with Emma Harrison. Follow @aroundllangorselake for more details.
