By j.bell on 24/05/2018

Get outdoors with the family this half term and explore the Fforest Fawr Geopark. Covering the western half of the Brecon Beacons National Park, there is lots to discover here.  We have mountains, castles, lakes, and wide open spaces as well as a whole host of exciting visitor attractions.

Here are a few ideas for things to keep everyone happy whatever the weather during the holidays.

1. Geofest Family Activity Day

Join in the fun at the annual Geofest Family Activity Day at Craig-y-nos Country Park on Wednesday 30th May, 10am-4pm.

The ever-popular zip-wire will be back, there is canoeing on the lake, orienteering around the park and stone carving.

Plus wildlife spotting, games on the lawn, traditional crafts and much more.

A geopark isn’t just about rocks!

Free entry to all, car parking £5 per car.

2. Go Underground

Explore the caves at Dan-yr-Ogof and walk behind an underground waterfall. There is plenty to do for all ages with a dinosaur park full of life-size dinosaur models, a Shire Horse Centre and play areas. Open daily at 10.00am with the last admission at 3.00pm.

5. Join the Mad Hatter

It’s all about Alice in Wonderland at Theatr Brycheiniog this half term. On Saturday 26th May join the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party or a craft workshop on the 28th and 29th May. The show itself; ‘Alice in Wonderland’, is a music and dance extravaganza for all the family to enjoy, with shows on the 2nd and 3rd June.

6. Down on the farm

Cantref Adventure Farm

Whatever the weather, join in the indoor and outdoor adventures at Cantref Adventure Farm near Brecon. There are live shows every half an hour, tractor & trailer rides, a pet barn, lambs to bottle feed and ponies to ride every day during the holidays.

7. All aboard!

Travel along the border of the Geopark by steam train at The Brecon Mountain Railway. The journey takes you from Merthyr, along the Taf Fechan Reservoir and out to Torpantau. There is plenty of time to enjoy the views, visit the tearoom and take photos with the vintage train.
