Ten things to during Brecon Women's Festival

This year's Brecon's Women's Festival takes place from Friday March 7th to Sunday March 16th. We have listed our top ten events to go to during the festival...

1) Creatures from Bogwood – See Great Sculptures...
Visit the Hours Cafe & Bookshop, Brecon for coffee and cake, and check out artist and sculptor Rosalind Davies' exhibition of beautiful new pieces from Irish Bogwood and Wye driftwood. Runs until Saturday 29th March at The Hours Cafe & Bookshop.

2) Sarah Siddons talk – Hear about history... John Hilary Williams of Breconshire Local & Family History Society for an illustrated talk on the life of Sarah Siddons, a celebrated Georgian actress who was born in Brecon in 1755 (the Sarah Siddons pub on the High Street was named after her). An audience discussion will follow the talk. Wednesday 5th March 2pm at Brecon Library.

3) Drumming Workshop with Rosie Whitfield – Play to your heart's content...
This colourful and fun basic drumming workshop taking in Afro-Brazilian rhythms, Japanese taiko, carnival and festival music is suitable for most family members.  No need to be able to read music – just able to count to four. No experience of drumming necessary. Open to all but under 16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. (Cathedral is wheelchair accessible. Instruments can be played sitting or standing). Saturday March 15th 4.30-6.30pm at Brecon Cathedral (Cost £5)

4) 'Women What Blog' – Learn how to blow your own trumpet...
Free workshop by FYI Brecon on how to set up a WordPress site, write content and post your first blog. Everyone welcome, yes even men! For further information, please email: hello@fyinetwork.co.uk Wednesday March 12th 6-8pm – The Hours Cafe & Bookshop

5) Brecon Women's Festival Fair – Buy beautiful things... A fabulous array of work produced by artists and craftspeople mainly from the Brecon Beacons National Park. There will also be an opportunity to hear Gena Davies, author of The Brecon Jazz Story in Pictures, talk about her experiences of photographing some of the most famous jazz musicians who have performed in Brecon.  Gena's talk will be followed by a performance by Brecon's Alive & Kickin Community Choir. Entry to the Fair is free. Saturday March 8th 10am-4pm at Brecon Guildhall

6) 'Homeopathy and Women's Health' by Jan Hurst – Love yourself naturally...
Jan's interest in homeopathy began following treatment for chronic illness after the birth of her first child. Overwhelmed by the effectiveness of the treatment she decided to train as a homeopath and believes 'Homeopathy can bring us back to health..naturally'.  Tuesday March 11th 6pm at the Hours Cafe & Bookshop (Free)

7) Tooth and Claw exhibition – Look at local Art...
The six local artists; Robin Baldwin, Jill Bourchier, Lee Wright, Leslie Lillywhite, Jen Fry and Kay Leverton explore the challenging concept of ‘Tooth and Claw’. All artwork is for sale and prints are available in the Tithebarn Shop. 8) 'Tarion' at The Hours Cafe & Bookshop – Listen to live music...
Celebrate International Women's Day relaxing at The Hours listening to this four piece band from Abergavenny. All female line-up 'Tarion' play guitar, bass and latin percussion singing original songs exploring longing and discovery with recurring images of the sea and local landscapes. Saturday 8th March 7.30pm at The Hours Cafe & Bookshop.

9) 'Women and Words' at The Hours Cafe & Bookshop – Share the spotlight... A celebration of Women poets, writers and icons that invites participants to read a piece by an inspiring writer, share their own work or an anecdote about Mothers, Grandmothers and other inspirational women. Features a performance by a group of local, up and coming young female singers and musicians 'When Words Fail'. (Free event/bar available) Thursday March 13th – 7pm – The Hours Cafe & Bookshop

10) Festival close with Tree Planting Ceremony at Brecon Promenade – Sow our legacy...
Join the Brecon Women's Festival Team and The Brecon Guild of Spinners & Weavers to plant a Spindle Tree at the weir to close this year's festival. Sunday 16th March 11am at the weir at Brecon Promenade.
