The future of one of Wales’ most treasured waterways hangs in the balance — and now is the time to act. On Wednesday 9 July 2025, supporters of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal will gather on the steps of the Senedd in Cardiff Bay from 12.30pm to 1.30pm to urge Welsh Government and key stakeholders to take action.
The rally takes place just hours before a Senedd Plenary debate on the Mon & Brec Canal petition, and aims to send a clear message: the Canal matters. Without urgent intervention to resolve long-standing water abstraction issues, the canal’s future — and the businesses and communities that depend on it — could be in serious jeopardy.
The Mon & Brec Canal is more than just a scenic waterway. It's a vital part of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, a historic link between communities, and an economic driver for tourism, boating, walking, wildlife and canal-side hospitality.
When: Wednesday 9 July 2025, 12.30pm–1.30pm
Where: Senedd Steps, Cardiff Bay
Why: To show Welsh Government the importance of urgent action to protect the Mon & Brec Canal and the ecology of the River Usk system
Wear your canal t-shirts, uniforms or polos
Bring your banners or placards to show how the canal’s loss would affect you or your business
Most importantly, bring your voice and your passion
The rally is open to everyone who loves and values the canal – whether you live nearby, run a business along its banks, or simply enjoy its beauty on foot, bike or boat.
If you’d like to attend the Senedd debate in person (expected from 3.30pm), you’ll need to book a free seat in the public gallery. Find out more here:

A visible, peaceful show of support will send a powerful message to decision-makers including Huw Irranca-Davies MS, Deputy First Minister, and the wider Welsh Government: the Canal and the River Usk must be protected, as one connected ecological system.
Every voice counts. Come and stand with us, and help protect the Mon & Brec Canal for future generations.
