October Half Term in the Brecon Beacons

Autumn has arrived in the Brecon Beacons with leaves starting to turn red and there is a chill in the air. With October half term approaching there are a lot of exciting autumn family activities coming up here in the Brecon Beacons.

We have a host of spooky and adventurous activities for you and you families to enjoy from pumpkin carving, to haunted house tours, to exploring an overgrown cave to ghoulish gold mine tours, to farmyard fun; there's something to suit every family.
 
Haunted House Tours and Spooky Sleepovers at Dinefwr Park and Castle
Fans of things that go bump in the night should head on over to Dinefwr Park this half term, where pumpkin carving, haunted house tours and spooky sleepovers are all on offer for brave souls of all ages.

Ghastly Gold Mines and Dolaucothi’s Dreadful Past 31st October

Step back in time at the oldest known Roman gold mine in the UK this Halloween, where young visitors have the opportunity to venture into the deep, dark depths of the mine with a ghoulish underground tour.

Taking place in the evening of 31st October, brave underground explorers will don their hard hats, switch on their miners’ lamps and embark on a journey to the centre of the Earth - finding out all about the mine’s horrible history, including Judge John’s infamous murder. Warm refreshments will be offered afterwards at the nearby Dolaucothi Arms, a cosy pub with its own historical connections to the infamous murder...Find out more here.

Monmouthshire Walking Festival 25th October til 2nd November

Monmouthshire has over a 1,000 miles of footpaths crisscrossing the county and 7 long distance trails which take you through a landscape of stark contrasts: flat coastal wetlands of the Gwent Levels; picturesque mountains in the north, Brecon Beacons National Park; the Wye Valley an AONB and the peaceful rolling farmland of the Usk and Monnow valleys.

The lengths of walks vary from 3 to a challenging 18 miles plus there is a torchlight walk for the whole family on Halloween with plenty of surprises in store. Find out more here.

Conkers contest at National Botanic Garden of Wales

In addition, the National Botanic Garden of Wales is inviting families to go Bonkers for Conkers this October half-term; inviting conker-lovers from across the country to come and show off their skills in the Great Carmarthenshire Conker Contest. The contest will take place daily from Saturday 24th October - Sunday 1st November, with free entry for under 16s all week. Find more information here.

Halloween at Dan Yr Ogof showcaves 31st October

Deep underground in Dan Yr Ogof Cave our annual ‘Halloween experience’ takes place. Long before you get to the unique setting for our Halloween festivities the cries, moans of the ghosts, and ghouls can be heard echoing through the cave! Looking up you will see witches flying out of the smaller cave passageways as they make their way to Cauldron Chamber, which is the starting point for this unearthly event.  Find out more here.

Myddfai & Llandovery Halloween Fireworks Event 31st October

Myddfai & Llandovery Communities have come together and combined Halloween and Fireworks Night at a community party to be held at Myddfai Community Hall and Visitor Centre on Saturday 31st October.

Beginning at 6:30pm with a Halloween party, there will be competitions for the Best Fancy Dress Costume (kids) and Best Carved Pumpkin (all ages), so time to get creative!

Also inside there will be stalls and activities including apple bobbing & coconut shy.

Outside, the fireworks begin at 7:30pm. Watch out for spaceships and scary spirits!! Afterwards live music and disco with local band Aunty Depressants.

Refreshments include a barbeque, chocolate fountain, toffee apples and hot soups, tea, coffee and hot chocolate and full licenced bar.  Find out more here.
