July Highlights: Two Stunning Textile Exhibitions in Brecon

By j.bell on 07/07/2025

This July, Brecon, heart of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, becomes a hub of textile artistry and historical storytelling with two complementary exhibitions at different venues:

1. The Longest Yarn: Britain at War

22–30 July 2025 | St Mary’s Church, Brecon
Experience 41 life-sized knitted and crocheted panels that chronicle Britain’s journey from 3 September 1939 to VE Day (8 May 1945). These deeply expressive tableaux—complete with knitted figures of soldiers, evacuees, land girls and more—were crafted by over 200 volunteer crafters with input from historians to ensure accuracy.
Entry is free, with donations encouraged to help tour the exhibition further. Panels are thoughtfully positioned for easy viewing, making this a moving exploration of resilience, sacrifice and community during wartime.

2. Stitched in Time: WW2 in Wool

22–31 July 2025 | Royal Welsh Regiment Museum, Brecon
Complementing the St Mary’s display, the Royal Welsh Museum presents Stitched in Time: WW2 in Wool, another evocative textile showcase. Drawing from their world-class collection of First and Second World War artefacts, this on-site exhibition explores home-front experiences and the cultural significance of wartime textiles.
Museum entry is free to local community group members, with standard admission for others. This is a rare chance to connect wool craft with genuine military objects—including medals, uniforms and personal memorabilia.

Why Visit Both?

Together, these exhibitions offer a rich, tactile journey through Britain’s wartime experience—blending heartfelt craftsmanship with historical authenticity. Discover how communal creativity reflected sacrifice and hope, from grand wartime tableaux to personal family stories captured in wool.
