One: Discover Welsh gold at Dolaucothi Gold Mines
These unique gold mines are set amid wooded hillsides overlooking the beautiful Cothi Valley. 2,000 years ago, the powerful Romans left behind a glimpse of gold-mining methods. The harsh mining environment continued in the 19th and 20th centuries, ending in 1938. Go on a guided tour and be taken back, to experience the conditions of the Roman, Victorian and 1930s underground workings.
Two: Black Mountain. Enjoy the quietness of the park, staying in quality accommodation such as Aber Cottages which are part of a working organic hill farm in the quieter Western part of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Three: Maen Llia is a 3.7 metre high standing stone. It’s age and original purpose are unknown though it is thought to date from the Bronze Age. Stay in the Castle Coaching Inn near by.
Four: The Gospel Pass south of Hay-on-Wye is the highest road pass in Wales. The name is supposed to derive from the passage through the Black Mountains in the 12th century of Crusaders preaching and fundraising. This is a great area for cycling and hiking. Hire bicycles or get a walking guide from Drover Holidays who are situated near by.
Five: Llanthony Priory is a partly ruined former Augustinian priory which dates back to 1100. Try Llanthony Riding and Trekking for a fun horse ride around this picturesque valley.
Six: Enjoy a fun day out at Carreg Cennen Castle. It’s in a great area for walking and the castle is situated in one of the most spectacular settings in the Brecon Beacons.
Seven: Take a tour to find out about the unique history of Welsh whisky at Penderyn Distillery. This is a fun trip where there’s plenty to see, learn and sample at Wales’ only whisky distillery.
Eight: Visit the Forgotten Landscapes World Heritage Site and Visitor Centre to discover a site considered as special as the pyramids and the Great Wall of China. The Forgotten Landscapes are a rich mosaic of geological features, industrial relics and nationally important wildlife habitats. Forgotten Landscapes are indeed a testimony to human endeavor but also a testimony to the healing power of nature. Start with a visit to the Blaenavon World Heritage Visitor to pick up maps of trails and learn about the area.
Nine: The National Coal Mine Museum or Big Pit offers a unique insight to the incredible industrial history of Wales past. Take a free tour of a historic underground mine.
