If you have seen our Essential Guide to the Brecon Beacons, you may have noticed a photo of a red kite on the front cover. This was taken by award winning nature photographer Gareth Scanlon. Gareth has also recently won a competition where one of his red kite photographs can now be found on the front of the OS maps of the Brecon Beacons!
Spend a day with Gareth with Good Day Out
Spend the day photographing Red Kites and other wildlife in the Brecon Beacons with amazing award-winning nature photographer Gareth Scanlon who is often found backpacking through the South Wales wilderness, photographing the breath-taking scenery and fascinating wildlife. Gareth has a background in nature conservation, and a long history of watching and interacting with red Kites. Gareth will help you understand how they fly and, to a certain degree, how to predict their movement and flight paths, making it easier to capture the image. The knowledge & insight from this day out can be applied to garden bird photography, and you shouldn’t fail to capture some stunning photos of these beautiful raptors.
All Good Day Out activities and adventures help a good cause in some way. In this instance, some of the proceeds will go towards helping the Red Kite Feeding Centre at Llandeussant in the Brecon Beacons. Gareth Scanlon provides the centre with photographs that they sell and use to promote their work of keeping a resident population of Red Kites in the area since their reintroduction in 2002 after near-extinction. “We would rather people come to see the bird at feeding stations than go tramping through the countryside looking for their nests and eggs” Tony Cross, Welsh Kite Trust.
