Big Pit National Coal Museum January 2018
Big Pit is offering something different to the usual visitor experience this winter. As the underground closes every year in January to carry out essential maintenance, (with the exception of weekends), this means that Big Pit can offer something quite unique to visitors during this period.
Blacksmithing Experience at Big Pit
Ever wanted to try your hand at the art of blacksmithing? Come and join our pit blacksmith for a special hands-on experience in the forge. Make your own fire poker or ash scraper to take away. The Lost Art of Mining Tour and Demonstration
The Lost Art of Mining will explain to visitors the type of work that goes on in keeping Big Pit open as one the UK’s leading tourist attractions. Join our Mechanical Engineer every Tuesday andThursday throughout January as he explains the actual maintenance that is happening on site and also demonstrates how smaller items of compressed air operated machinery was used underground. Puss in Boots, brand new Pantomime - DATE CHANGES

A trio of professionals from London’s West End Theatreland features in this new magical pantomime, which promises the very best of Seasonal Entertainment for all the family.
Written and produced by Peter Karrie, famous the world over for roles such as Phantom of the Opera and Valjean in Les Miserables, it will see his first outing as a Grande Dame of the Stage.
Commissioned by The Blaenavon Workmen’s Hall, this new panto promises to bring a new vitality to the genre at a competitive ticket price, and is one surely not to be missed!

Spotlight on Wales as Man Engine rises again and visits Blaenavon
The largest mechanical puppet ever constructed in Britain, the moving, steaming, mechanical Man Engine, is set to visit Wales for the very first time next year.
The monumental Man Engine, which stands 11.2m tall and resembles a giant miner, will visit eight of south Wales’s most important industrial heritage locations for a week of celebrations from 8th - 12 April 2018. The colossal feat of engineering will visit Big Pit andBlaenavon Ironworks on the 8th April and then make its way to Ebbw Vale Steelworks, Cyfarthfa Park and Castle, Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, the National Waterfront Museum Swansea, Swansea City Centre and the Hafod-Morfa Copperworks as part of his journey across Wales, entitled: “Man Engine Cymru: forging a nation”.
