Brecon Film Society support Brecon Women's Festival with a special screening of Charulata – The Lonely
Wife. Written and directed in 1964 by Satyajit Ray based on the story Nastanirh (The
Broken Nest) by Rabindranath Tagore, set in Calcutta in 1879. The Bengali Renaissance
is at its peak, and India is under British rule. Against this backdrop unfolds the story of
Charulata the intelligent and beautiful but lonely wife of Bhupati. Desire, intrigue and
politics entwine in this evocative film
