Did you know this week is Catch the Bus Week? Going green and taking the bus can save you time and money!
In celebration of ditching your car, what better way to travel around the Brecon Beacons than on the wonderful T4 bus which sets off from the capital of Cardiff up to 7 times day, ending in Newtown.
Here's T4's Brecon Town Trail and local experts Brecon Beacons Holiday Cottages have contributed with tips and some great cottages along the rest of the route...
1. BRECON
If you have 3 hours in Brecon...
Tourist Information Centre (TIC) Guidebooks, maps, gifts and very knowledgeable staff.
Cathedral & Heritage Centre
Doctor Who filming location, regimental colours from Rourke’s Drift and largest cresset stone (a medieval light) in Britain – just some of its many claims to fame.Remains of the 11th century castle now form part of a hotel.
Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal Basin
There’s always something going on here – narrowboats, walkers, ducks, events at the adjacent theatre.
Lime Kilns
During the 19th century limestone was often transported by water and tramroad to canalside limekilns where it was burned to produce lime for use as a fertiliser and a building material. Nearby is a wooden sculpture - a reminder of Brecon’s industrial past.
Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh
Focal point is the Zulu War exhibition telling the story of Rourke’s Drift.
If you have 5 or more hours in Brecon...
Walkers can trek to the top of the Iron Age hillfort Pen y Crug while families will enjoy some leisurely time at the Promenade.
And if you fancy stopping the night...
Of course a stay in the town means a townhouse; Ty Tal is a grand Georgian property sleeping 6, or Mercian House is immaculate and sleeps an enormous 10!
2. FELIN FACH GRIFFIN - Maes-Y-Berllan
Once passing one of the best gastro-pubs in Wales, it would be a shame not to stop by for a relaxing dinner followed by a soundless sleep in peaceful Maes-Y-Berllan which is only a mile away. Sleeps 6.
3. BRONLLYS- Beacons Edge
This bungalow is set conveniently between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye - perfect for a quiet base to hop from town to town. Sleeps 4.
4. TALGARTH - Little Donkey
This cottage is quite special as it's is named after the rescue donkeys kept in a nearby field! The centre of Talgarth is just a few minutes walk to relax before you continue your journey by bus, or maybe you won't be able to resist staying a few days. Sleeps 2.
5. ERWOOD - Gromain Lodge
This old fishing lodge is a stunning location en route with flowers around every corner and a great spot for birdwatching too. If you’re bored of traveling by bus you could even canoe to Hay-on-Wye! Sleeps 10.
6. BUILTH WELLS - Rhos Ferig House
As the bus then heads out of the National Park, make sure you don’t miss the final stretch to visit the legendary Royal Welsh Showground reached easily from Rhos Ferig House. Sleeps 10.
