‘Gone to Seed’ features stunning photography of plants from the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Taken by Mike Danford, they uncover a barely noticed world of flowers which have shed their showy petals and, as the saying goes, have gone to seed. ‘Gone to Seed’ is showing in the Garden’s Stables Art Gallery, just opposite the shop.
Join Genevieve this Saturday 6th June for a taster session in drawing and watercolour painting in the glorious setting of the Great Glasshouse at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Throughout the day you will give you opportunity to develop techniques and explore new materials. As well as a study of the plant life and landscape of the Great Glasshouse there may also be opportunity to use the surrounding landscape of the Garden and beyond as a stimulus for your work. Visitors to the National Botanic Garden will be encouraged to pick up a hammer and chisel in a special weekend to celebrate sculpture.
A series of 12 sculptures are dotted around the Garden as part of a collaboration between Sculpture Cymru and the Garden's International Barcode of Life Project.
On the weekend of June 6-7, there will be a chance to meet the Sculpture Cymru team behind the Garden’s sculpture trail which has been running since January and will continue until the end of September.
Part of the weekend will involve visitors getting the chance to attempt their own carving or sculpture.
“The weekend will give Garden visitors the opportunity to have a go at making art and to engage with the exhibition,” said Sarah Tombs, from Sculpture Cymru.
“There will also be a symposium where speakers from the diverse fields of art, science and history will present on themes related to the project - the role of ‘Art-Science’ schemes and the ability of 'art' to visualise and ‘promote’ scientific research.”
In all, nine members of Sculpture Cymru have created artworks in response to the International Barcode of Life Project.
The featured artists are Glenn Morris, Mandy Lane, Sarah Tombs, Kevin Blockley, Antonia Spowers, Lyndon Mably, Paul Kincaid, Dilys Jackson and John Howes.
The Garden is open from 10am to 6pm with last entry at 5pm. Admission to the Garden is £9.75 (including Gift Aid). A family ticket (for 2 adults and up to four children) is £24. Entry is FREE for Garden members and parking is free for all.
