Where to celebrate Afternoon Tea Week in the Brecon Beacons

Afternoon Tea Week is a celebration of one of the nation’s favourite traditions. Whether enjoyed in a 5-star hotel, or a delightful Welsh Cafe, the British love the combination of savoury and sweet treats, accompanied by some of the 165 million cups of tea we drink each day in the UK.  The Brecon Beacons have some of the finest Afternoon Teas around, using local produce to create an afternoon tea worth having! Here are our top 14 places to enjoy afternoon tea.

Llangoed Hall 

Afternoon tea at Llangoed Hall
Where?
A country mansion next to the River Wye, just next the A470 near Llyswen, on the fringes of the Brecon Beacons.

What can you have? Sandwiches, homemade fruitcake, cream pastries, trifle, homemade scones, preserves and clotted cream, elderflower champagne if you're feeling indulgent, all served on beautiful and exclusively designed bone china crockery. Full menu here 

A simple Cream Tea is £15 per person; Welsh Tea with bara brith and Welsh cakes is £12.50; the Full Afternoon Tea, including cakes and pastries from Llangoed Hall Patisserie is £26; the Laura Ashley Afternoon Tea, with a glass of elderflower champagne, is £32.50, or the champagne afternoon tea is £40.

Angel Hotel High Tea at the Angel Hotel, Abergavenny

Where? A grand hotel right in the heart of Abergavenny, just down the street from the town's bustling market.

What can you have? Choose between afternoon tea, which involves sandwiches, scones, freshly cakes and pastries, and your choice of teas, infusions or coffee, or high tea, to which you can add a selection of warm savoury pastries. The hotel is one of very view holders of a Tea Guild Award of Excellence outside London. It cost £21.80 per person for afternoon tea, or £26.80 per person for high tea

The Hours Cafe and Bookshop

Where?
Situated on Ship Street in the Market town of Brecon in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, known for its quirky exterior.

What can you have? The Hours have a selection of Sandwiches available, served on locally baked granary or white bread with Penpont Estate organic salad. They also serve a selection of sweets, including teacake and Welsh Cakes. They sell a range of coffee and tea

The Welsh Venison Centre
Where? Just off the A40 in Bwlch between Abergavenny and Brecon, with Venison roaming in the fields around the Farm Shop.

What can you have? Stop for a cup of tea and slice of cake, admire the stunning views of the Brecon Beacons, and see deer, sheep and cows roaming the fields. Enjoy a spot of shopping in their farm shop afterwards.


The Gliffaes Hotel

Where? Overlooking the River Usk in its own grounds. Follow signs for Gliffaes from the A40 west of Crickhowell.

What can you have? Take your homemade cakes to the terrace and enjoy the sun or sit by the fire if chilly. They serve their tea buffet style, so you can help yourself from the selection of scones, sandwiches and cakes…and then come back for more if you want. Afternoon Tea costs £15 per person .

Llansantffraed Court

Llansantffraed Court 

Where? An elegant mansion just north of the A40 between Abergavenny and Raglan, just outsuide the borders of the Brecon Beacons National Park. You'll need to take the A4598 to get there, rather than the dual carriageway.

What can you have? A choice of three teas named after local villages: the Llanvihangel Tea offers a selection of finger sandwiches with a pot of tea or a cafetiere of coffee; the Llanarth Tea pairs Welsh cakes or scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam together with tea, coffee or a selection of fruit or herb infusions; or the Llansantffraed Full Afternoon Tea features finger sandwiches, fruit cake, Welsh cakes, scones with clotted cream and jam, plus tea or coffee. The Llanvihangel Tea is £10.25, the Llanarth Tea is £11.75 or the Llansantffraed Full Afternoon Tea is £15.

The Manor Hotel
Where? Just outside the main town and high street, in a prominent position just off the A40.

What can you have? The Afternoon Tea Menu is served daily from 12noon till 6.00pm. They serve a great selection of fresh sandwiches, home made cakes and scones with clotted cream and jam.

The Dragon Inn 
Where? The historic Dragon Inn is an old hostelry located directly on Crickhowell High Street, just down past the butchers and florist.

What can you have? Afternoon Tea is a speciality and a favourite at the Dragon and should not be missed. All produce for the teas are sourced locally including local jams and homemade scons. Perhaps add a bottle of Prosecco or Champagne for that special occasion!

Bedwellty House 
Where? Bedwellty House is a Grade II-listed house and gardens in Tredegar, in the Sirhowy Valley in south-east Wales

What can you have? Treat yourself to a spot of luxury with a fabulous Afternoon Tea. They have a delicious selection of homemade sweet and savoury treats to enjoy in their Orchid House Tea Room, costing £12.50 per person.

The Lake Country House HotelWhere? In the heart of mid Wales lies this country hotel set within 50 acres of parkland with lake and riverside walks, not far from Builth Wells. The hotel is a perfect base to explore the Brecon Beacons.

What can you have? Enjoy Afternoon Tea in the lounge or outside which includes finger sandwiches, scones with preserves and cream, homemade cakes and pastries and a selection of teas and coffees for £18.00 per person.

Ty Newydd Country HotelWhere? Lies on the edge of the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park. Local attarctions include Caerphilly Castle or Blaenavon, country parks, forest drives, waterfalls and narrow gauge railways.

What can you have? Afternoon Tea includes a selection of finger sandwiches, bara brith (traditional Welsh fruit loaf), Welsh cakes and scones with cream and strawberry jam, served with a choice of tea or coffee. From £36

Old Barn Tea Room

Where? west of the Pontsticill Reservoir, in Torpantau, Merthyr Tydfil, South of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

What can you have? They serve a variety of cakes an
d teas, known for their fresh scones. 

JOLS at Redhouse

Where? Based in the old town hall in Merthyr Tydfil, based in the South of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

What can you have? Enjoy a selection of fresh sandwiches, cakes and drinks, they also serve Mario's luxury Welsh Gold Medal winning dairy ice-cream.
